- "What country are you from? Africa?"
- "Do people in your country live in trees?"
- "You eat worms and lots of bugs, right?"
- "You are from Kenya, so you are Masai, right? Why do you only drink blood and milk?"
But I need some nice new exciting characters to spruce up my boring blog. And yes, they may be African or Kenyan stereotypes. Kenyan literary critic Binyavanga Wainaina's excellent satirical piece "How to Write About Africa" offers some good advice in this regard:
Your African characters may include naked warriors, loyal servants, diviners and seers, ancient wise men living in hermitic splendour. Or corrupt politicians, inept polygamous travel-guides, and prostitutes you have slept with.Which character do you think I should write a blog post about? A naked warrior? A prostitute I have slept with? Any others?
